24 Hours of Radio Art: The Maqlu Tarot

Today at noon PST I did an hour long set on CiTR's annual 24 Hours of Radio Art, in which I debuted my series of short compositions, The Maqlu Tarot.

22 short compositions loosely inspired from meditating on the 22 cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot, designed to be played at random to see what it evokes.

Sonically it ranges from mutilated spoken word and distorted guitar to lovely little MIDI brass compositions to carefully arranged birdsong samples that almost sound plausibly natural to pseudo-club 1990s industrial.

The Maqlu Tarot is available as a free download from my website (a .zip of all 22 MP3s) or you can grab individual tracks off my last.fm profile.

This is the order in which they were played on 24 Hours of Radio Art. The randomization was set by putting the tracks on shuffle through an iTunes playlist.

Since I know I mentioned this show ad nauseum in my concert listings for the last couple months, and since I won't be on-air again til after it was supposed to happen, I figure I'd best mention that the Maqlu/Frederick/Friday Mortimer & the Beautiful Monsters show that was supposed to happen Wednesday January 5th at the Media Club in Vancouver has been postponed due to illness, waiting to hear what the make-up date will be.

So, the Jakalope/Marianas Trench show I went to on Saturday got roasted by the Georgia Straight. No surprise, they do hate 604 Records acts, and I was going to just ignore it but then again, I never can shut up. Here's what I posted on their comments board, in amongst the ocean of Trenchies saying "Oh yeah, well... fuck you!" and the occasional well-thought out rebuttal to the article.

I actually wrote for Discorder for years off and on, was even a section editor and production manager too, so I do get the whole "we're serious music critics and therefore pop music or anything that moves more than 15 units SUCKS" vibe, really I do, so I tried to leave that sort of aspect out of it lest I start sounding like a hysterical fan girl defending a band I like from evildoers. (Technically speaking, Jakalope are friends of mine, not just a band I like from afar, but they're big boys and girls and don't need defending.)

Wow, talk about a shitstorm... but having been around the college radio and music critic scene for 10 years (CiTR Radio and Discorder), I know that's exactly what you were hoping for.

First up, I'll say I didn't see Marianas Trench's set, only Jakalope's. I'll grant you that Marianas Trench's fans get a little hyper, but so what? Nothing worse than I remember seeing at Nine Inch Nails shows back in the day, and the NIN fans were hardly tweens so age doesn't come into this at all. Actually, Trench fans are far less bat-shit insane than NIN or Marilyn Manson fans, so really your criticism of the audience is moot.

Hard core fans tend to be the same across all genres, and you can't fault them for that: they're what this business needs now more than ever in the current music climate. Hell, the kids cleaned out the merch booth of all Marianas Trench stuff (save one lonely unliked t-shirt design) by the end of the opening act's set. Most artists would kill for those sort of results.

Let me get this straight - everyone's bellyaching about a lack of strong fan support for artists, but when you see an example of strong fan support you mock it?

I will say it's strange to me to see 6 year olds at a rock show, but that's more on account of how 99% of the shows I go to are in clubs. The kids were pretty well-behaved and appreciative of being able to go to a concert, cut them some slack - they're your future readers.

Is this really about the fans and the show or is it about how the "Serious Music Press" has it in for 604 Records on account of the Nickelback connection? (You know, God forbid you sell music that people seem to wanna hear on the radio...)

Now, onto Jakalope's performance. You do understand that grinding feedback is not intended by the band, right? Maybe if we were talking Einstuerzende Neubauten it would be intentional but here it's a technical accident of walking an inch too close to a monitor and every time it happened people moved back to stop it immediately. It happens at the Biltmore for hipster bands, it happens at the Backstage Lounge for singer-songwriters strumming acoustic guitars, it happens at the Cobalt for the hot new punk trio. Get over it.

I don't know where you were seated and I do believe the Orpheum, like the Queen E, has some acoustic dead spots where things sound screwed up, but from down in the front nothing sounded tinny at all, it was a pretty full sound. I didn't find Chrystal's voice too shrill, there were a couple points where she used a screaming tone for effect. Big deal.

As for "industrial waste," you really don't know, do you? Go listen to Neubauten and Puppy and FLA. Jakalope pretty much play straight up electro-rock, it's not actually the same thing.

Was it perfect? Nothing ever is. But I'd hardly call it a clusterfuck either and I've seen plenty of those for comparison. Some of which involved actual "industrial waste" acts, which you might well consider brilliant on account of them being on a different label and only having 20 fans in any given city.

PS: Platinum records tend to be garishly framed these days. The days of the simple plain frame were in the 1970s when there were a lot more of them being given out. If you don't like the frame or presentation, be thankful you don't have to hang it in your own living room. From what I understand, Marianas Trench's album has now been released in the USA, perhaps there will be an American gold or platinum soon enough. Because clearly Canadian bands are only valid after the Americans pay attention.

My guest on the show this week was kAINE D3L4Y of Left Spine Down. Aside from his frontman duties, kAINE also DJs around town, including the first Sin City every month at Club 23 West, and he gave us a taste of his wide-ranging DJ sets.

I'll be chatting about my main project, Maqlu, and the EPs for that as well as playing some music, including some of the remixes I've done for other artists. I'll also have a few new tracks, at least two of which have not been heard anywhere else yet.

So, this being the Canada Day long weekend, I figured I'd do an all-Canadian show. Then in sorting through my music collection, I realized I could actually focus in even further and do an almost-all Vancouver-based special.

First up, though, last week I chatted with Sever of Victoria's Tribal Machine about his new disc, The Orwellian Night, so I wanted to kick off the show with that interview and a couple of tracks. You can grab the album from Sever here:

Speaking of new releases, earlier today I saw a note on Facebook from the folks at Litany.net about a brand new ohGr single and I quickly grabbed it. Tonight I see ohGr's hit the mailing list and about 3 of my email accounts had the message to go grab "tragek" from the website. I recommend you go do the same:

The single is available as either an MP3 or a .wav. While you're there you can grab a spoken word piece, and if you haven't already gotten them, the single "Collidoskope" and the collection of remixes of "Collidoskope," all of which are free.

And in other news, I mentioned it at the end of this week's show and will mention it again closer to the time: on Friday July 30th from 12:00-1:00pm PST I will be a guest on Euanator Radio on our sister station CJSF [90.1FM in the Vancouver region or cjsf.ca to listen live], where I will be chatting with Euan about my own musical project, Maqlu. I'll be playing tracks from my debut EP, Blood, along with a few remixes I've done. I might even have one or two of the new tracks I'm working on for my next EP done by then.

This week I started the show at 10:30pm to fill in for Shake a Tail Feather as Jason was away. So, three parts to the podcast this week.

My guest on the show this week was kAINE D3L4Y of Left Spine Down. Aside from his frontman duties, kAINE also DJs around town, including the first Sin City every month at Club 23 West, and he gave us a taste of his wide-ranging DJ sets.

UK Pirate Radio Documentary

So, the UK is seriously still shutting down underground radio? I thought that shit went out the window in the 70s.

Personally, I wish we had something like that here in Vancouver - internet radio is great if you're at a desk or something, but I get sick of the local offerings when I'm in traffic and there's a dial full of nothing worth listening to. Granted that I don't give a crap about the hip hop stuff featured so prominently in the documentary, but the principle is the same.

And yeah, MySpace means people can hear your stuff, but that only matters if they hear that they can hear your stuff. There are millions of profiles on MySpace, it means jack shit. Whereas a DJ can make a huge difference in pushing bands because they filter through it all and find the good stuff to share.

Album's killer, can't wait til it's out.

1. This week's show will feature an interview with Julie Ferris of Moev. We chat about the new album, Ventilation, and what's been going on in the world of Moev.

2. I also interviewed Tom Anselmi and Phil Western after the Hello World show on February 20th at the Candahar. Waiting on a copy of The Hidden World from Tom's old band Copyright, so I think I'll play the interview next week as I should have received my Ebay music fix parcel by then.

3. Since I know some people find this blog whilst searching for Jakalope news, my little public service announcement of the day is that they've set up a Twitter feed, twitter.com/jakalopemusic - as of today you can follow that for updates. So far they've mentioned they're shooting a video for the new single next week, still no release date for the album but I'll see if I can track Rave down next week to find out for you.

EDIT Feb 26, 2010: And as if on cue [or maybe he reads this blog, fuck if I know], Rave posted today on the Jakalope Twitter that the single "Witness" is out the end of March and the album's out the end of May.

On Electronic Music

It seems to have disappeared now, even off the internet. Oh sure, I have a copy somewhere in a box of old Discorders, my half-assed portfolio of published writings. But my plan to just cut and paste it is now screwed.

What am I on about here? A review I wrote almost a decade ago about a show I saw at the Vancouver Cultural Centre with Phh!K and Particle Burn.

It matters to me because I think that Particle Burn set was the first time I was consciously aware of the effect electronic-based music has on me, the way I feel those synthesized pulses in different parts of my body. It varies by pitch, by waveform type, by volume, by timbre, by panning.

What I experienced that night was something of a sonic massage. Certain sounds hit me in certain spots - higher pitches were more pointed and drilled less far, maybe as far in as my sinuses. Bass waves pressed my whole body and tended to vibrate the back of my skull and my spine where it pressed the seat back. Mids could be all over, some more in my scalp, some more in my shoulders, some in my hips or arms. Somewhere I might even have my original notes from that show, who knows.

I've gotten more adept at pinpointing this sort of thing since, noticing some pitches buzz my teeth in an unpleasant manner, some sounds I hear more in my forehead, some more in my gut. I've also noticed that for the most part it's something I feel more from synth-based music than traditional instruments, save maybe piano. Hence I think somehow purer waveforms have a stronger effect than something with a great amount of overtones, but I'm not completely certain. I do know if I go to your typical rock show I will still enjoy it, but not feel it on as much of a visceral level as I will at an electronic music event.

If a melody has a descending interval, I feel a sinking. Dissonance interests me more than consonance because as the notes rub against each other they seem to effervesce somehow. There is a shimmer that sounds and feels more interesting.

I suppose it's a kind of synesthesia, although maybe not since sound is pressure waves after all.

I recall chatting with Michaela Galloway of Hinterland and the Hope Slide and she was saying she finds some people resonate better with a particular kind of wave, and sometimes the people who are better with say, square waves, maybe don't blend as well with another waveform's people. I haven't figured out a specific waveform I jive best with, but it seems in general any of the purer oscillator ones work nicely. [Even though I usually blend oscillators and noise to get more complicated waves...]

And I recall something LaVey wrote about certain people will always be, say, flautists and never saxophone players and he could often tell them apart on sight.

Synths just plain speak to me more than guitars do. I can tune into them much more readily and get lulled into an altered state of consciousness, not really a trance, but getting there. It's its own form of meditation for me. The closest comparison I can think of in the realm of traditional orchestration would be that I can feel ethnic drumming performances almost on the same level.

I've made it work for me when I mix, having learned that the best thing I can do when I think I have the mix right is to move away from the board and see if I can feel it correctly. To this end I will move a bit back in the control room and sit on the floor with the mix cranked. And I never wear sneakers now, always thin-soled shoes to see if the subs come up through my feet the right way. Do the highs hit me in the front of my face? Do the mids press into my shoulders and my jaw? Does the bass move through me? Are there a variety of pressure points or did I bunch the panning too much? Volume often is the determiner of whether I feel things in front or more to my back, but there seems to be more variation here. And whether it's pleasant or harsh, a push or a poke seems to correlate to a certain extent with how it's EQ'd.

Doesn't work as well with rock or punk, there I have to think more than feel. [Except for the EQ and panning, those seem to work regardless of genre and originating instrument.]

I've also gotten used to being able to extrapolate somewhat from listening on headphones so that when I am creating music on my laptop I can know whether it will feel the way I want it to feel.

I don't go to clubs as much as I should, but I noticed at Sanctuary at Club 23 West for the Landscape Body Machine show in November [talk about your prime examples of great electronic music] that I was drawn to stand two feet in front of the monster PA system that's as tall as I am and dance, feeling the wave of the phrasing and the bass moving through me. Standing up on the mezzanine at the same club for the iVardensphere show at the end of January the effect was a little lessened, probably because I was not in a direct line with the sound anymore, even though I could hear it loud and clear and still found I quite enjoyed it. I was in and out of that state, probably on account of being there as the promotions rep my brain was locked a little bit into "work mode" and that might matter as much as distance from the PA.

Getting right up in front for Skinny Puppy in November I could feel the synths quite well, for some reason the song "Ugli" especially sticks out in my mind as having caught me in the wave. And most recently on February 20th I situated myself about 6 feet from the stage in the Candahar at Hello World's most recent show and noticed myself gelling into the wall of synthetic sound and sculptured noise that Tom Anselmi, Laure-Elaine Cote, Phil Western and Jamey Koch were creating. I noticed myself moving to the pulse and wave without even thinking of it, and eventually there were a few people dancing and I was convinced to get on my feet and join them.

This show was easily the best thing I've heard/felt since that Particle Burn show. I'll get my ass kicked for saying that, and I'm not saying there haven't been other shows that were maybe more kick ass in the traditional sense of what a rock show is supposed to be like.

I've never really heard anything else from Particle Burn and the internet left me no trail either. All I know is it was three guys sitting with laptops, blasting through the Cultch's PA. Once I thought I found a bio somewhere from someone who listed the band in their credits, but when I read the page Google linked to it wasn't really there and those words apparently only appeared in links pointing to the page.

In a way maybe that's fitting for something as ephemeral as a concert experience. You can never relive it, it's probably just as well that you can't pin it down in any other way either.

[Which isn't to say I can't wait to hear the actual Hello World record as soon as it's done, just that a record is a whole other experience than the live creation of the sound. A record is the snapshot, not the actual vista.]

Pyra Draculea: 24 Hours of Radio Art set podcast

Well, this was the first year I got a slot on CiTR's annual 24 Hours of Radio Art. I played a few of my noise pieces, one of my songs which kinda of fit [maybe], and a long mash-up/collage I decided to call "The Obvious Thing To Do."

Inspired by the fact that my slot was on a Sunday morning. Also maybe a little bit of the notion of a religion becoming like a drug for some people.

People will probably get the wrong idea about the back half of that. And by people I mean any of my relatives Googling me looking for dirt.

Plus my parents have the weirdest record collection, albeit unintentionally so. Most of it's my music, though. [And my music collection is intentionally weird.]

Much of this stuff was messed up through a Behringer mixer, using its aux sends to go to a Big Muff distortion pedal and a separate send to a Guvnor overdrive. I was originally going to live mix prepared tracks on air, but then I got going on preparing those tracks and before you know it I was done.

And yeah, I realize the really obvious thing to do would be to juxtapose that Marilyn Manson track with a certain Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but I didn't find all of my parents' vinyl collection, just a couple pieces. I swear by next year I'll have dug more of it up.

There were also Librivox recordings of public domain works: "A Freeman's Worship" by Bertrand Russell, "Of Truth" by Francis Bacon" and Humboldt's "Degrees of Enjoyment." And yes, I did swipe a sample from "Os Invidus." What can I say - I needed a guy saying something like "that's all I ask" in both.

There were also two songs: at the beginning CiTR's music director Luke Meat requested that I start with the Birthday Party's song "Happy Birthday." And at the end I had enough time to squeeze in a song of mine called "Lord of the Flies." In order to mess it up more for the noise/collage motif, I layered a couple of Controlled Bleeding LPs under it. I forgot to note which ones.

Girl [who is doing her class write-up on Switchfoot, this becomes important in a second] sees the Ministry C U LaTour 08 sticker on my laptop.

I mention I got it in a goodie bag at the RevCo show in September.

"Oh, their audio is terrible!"

What? RevCo has awesome production.

"No, I mean their audio is terrible."

Well, maybe she meant at the actual show, there were a few issues with bass dropping out, some other technical snafus.

"No... I mean, they're phenomenal, but I don't care for what they stand for."

Oh. I get it now.

Tell it to someone who cares, toots.

And FYI: Lyrical content isn't actually the same thing as audio.
